ROUNDABOUT, Chapel Ash Island, Wolverhampton, UK
About the event
In May, we mark the next stage of the ROUNDABOUT project and the end of the second artist residency by unveiling new work in the Chapel Ash underpass.
Funded by Arts Council England, Wolverhampton City Council and Art Gallery, and the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity fund, the ROUNDABOUT project has, so far, seen two residency artists work to create light and sculpture interventions across the site plus branding, soundscapes and gardening by two micro-commissioned artists.
On 19th May, you will have the chance to witness the unveiling of four galvanised steel sculptures or 'monuments' made by second residency artist Luke Perry in collaboration with members of the local community as well as the work by first residency artist David Checkley installed on lampposts for the first time. Plus, you’ll have the opportunity to speak to our micro-commissioned artists Billy Haynes and Luke Reader about their work which includes the beginning stages of planting a community garden and soundscape and new branding for ROUNDABOUT across the site.
Sculptor Luke Perry has worked with two co-designers from our Community Board for his sculptures. Matt Lloyd and Giovanni Uche will be at the Monuments event talking about how they developed ideas for two of the four sculptures and how the themes of recovery and the Black Arts Movements are important to Chapel Ash and reflect the cultural ecology of the area.
Marked with sound and movement, this will be an exciting event which sees the most change in the Chapel Ash island underpass space so far.
RSVP, save the date, and sign up to our mailing list to be the first to hear more about the event as we reveal more.
